St. Mildreds-Lightbourn School

Oakville, Ontario

A LEED Silver elementary school demonstrates how a beautifully organized and light-filled building helps to raise the students’ sense of wellbeing.

St.Mildred’s, a private all-girls school, spent over a decade preparing to implement a master plan to expand and renew the school for the next generation. They retained us to complete the final phase of this journey with a renovation and addition that provides ELC classrooms, music labs, a student centre, a dining hall with a servery and a commercial kitchen, and a new senior school library.

The multifunctional building is bathed with daylight and connections between indoor and outdoor spaces. The dining hall, library and classrooms are distinguished by their well-framed views and direct access to naturalized play areas. Broad hallways, like mini streets, encourage informal gathering and learning.

Underscoring the school’s commitment to current and longterm sustainability, the LEED Silver certified project incorporates geothermal heating and cooling, a greywater collection cistern for toilet flushing, drought-tolerant landscaping, a sustainable design education program, and light-coloured roofing to reduce the heat island effect.
